Two roads, and we never show one learner both

A junior aiming at a four-year college and a senior aiming at a job the week after graduation are not studying the same thing, and a product that offers everything to everybody is telling both of them it does not know who they are. Each profile sees the road it is on.

The college road

  • PSAT/NMSQT®

    / 760

The practice SAT most students take in 10th or 11th grade.

    2 sections · 16 questions · about 23 min of practice

  • SAT®

    / 800

The college entrance test most US universities accept.

    2 sections · 16 questions · about 23 min of practice

  • ACT®

    / 36

The other college entrance test — same purpose, different style.

    4 sections · 32 questions · about 27 min of practice

  • GED®

    / 200

A high-school equivalency diploma, taken outside school.

    4 sections · 32 questions · about 35 min of practice

    145 passes each subject.

The career and placement road

  • ASVAB (AFQT)

    % correct

The military entrance test. These four subtests decide eligibility.

    4 sections · 32 questions · about 47 min of practice

Your AFQT is a percentile from the official test -- each service sets its own minimum.

  • ACCUPLACER®

    / 300

The placement test that decides which college courses you start in.

4 sections · 32 questions · untimed, as the real one is

Nobody passes or fails -- each college sets its own placement cutoffs.

  • WorkKeys®

    level

Three assessments that earn the National Career Readiness Certificate — Bronze to Platinum.

    3 sections · 24 questions · about 39 min of practice

Your certificate is set by your LOWEST of the three — Bronze 3, Silver 4, Gold 5, Platinum 6. Official testing gives the real level.

  • ATI TEAS® 7

    % correct

The entrance exam for most nursing and allied-health programs.

    4 sections · 32 questions · about 40 min of practice

No national pass mark -- each program sets its own cutoff.

We are the training ground, not the scorekeeper. Our score estimates are rough bands meant to aim your practice. For the number that counts, sit the test owner's own official practice test — and check anything with a date on it with them, not with us.

How to study so it counts

Most of a score comes from six habits, and four of them are the opposite of what feels productive.

  • Take the first one cold

Do not revise before your first timed section. A baseline you have warmed up for aims every week of practice after it at the wrong skills.

  • Chase the skill, not the score

A score is a lagging number that moves slowly and tells you nothing to do on Tuesday. Per-skill mastery tells you exactly what to open.

  • Let it resurface what is fading

Mastery decays here on purpose, so review comes back round before you have lost it. Re-grinding what you already own feels like work and buys nothing.

  • Practice against the clock, not the answer key

Pacing is a separate skill from knowing the content, and untimed drilling never teaches it. That is why there are no hints inside a timed section.

  • Finish the section you are losing

Walking away from a bad set teaches you to walk away. Finish it, then read which skills cost the points — that list is the only useful thing a bad score produces.

  • Say which road you are on, early

A 10th-grader who already knows it is a trade or the military should be in the career road now, not doing SAT reading for two years out of politeness.

Which year, which work

The four years are not interchangeable, and the most common mistake is starting the expensive part too late to use what it tells you.

  1. 19th and 10thAlmost none of this is test prep. It is algebra, reading closely, and writing a paragraph that argues something — the core every exam on this page is secretly made of. Homework help is the whole product here. One early timed section is worth doing, purely to find out what the format feels like while nothing is riding on it.
  2. 211thThe year that matters most, because it is the last one where a result still leaves you time to act on it. The practice-exam formats are worth sitting properly now, and the per-skill list they produce is what the next six months of practice should be aimed at.
  3. 312thTwo different jobs depending on the road. College: a second sitting, aimed only at the skills that cost points the first time. Career or placement: this is when the career road earns its keep — placement and entry exams are sat in this year and the one after it.

What a prep course sells you

A seat, a schedule, and somebody else's pacing — eight weeks that run whether or not they are aimed at your weak skills, at a price that quietly decides which kids get to prepare. The teaching inside it is usually fine. The gate in front of it is the problem.

This is free, it is aimed at your skills rather than a syllabus, and it runs at eleven at night the week before. There is nothing to cancel, because there is nothing to start.

And the homework that is due tomorrow

Exams are the loud part of four years that are mostly just coursework. Photograph the problem set and the tutor works the concept with you rather than handing over an answer — the same voice tutor, the same mastery tracking, every subject.
